Many accidents result from the use of incorrect materials of constraction, particularly when corrosive chemicals are being used. A Materials of Construction table such as that shown in Table 4.2 provides how various materials of construction can be used for containing chemicals A—E.

Materials of Construction. In choosing the proper materials of constmction for storing and using hydrazine, it is necessary to consider both the effects of the material on the stabiUty and quaUty of the hydrazine as well as the effect of the hydrazine on the material of constmction. Hydrazine is thermally stable, storable for years without adverse effects either to the product or the storage container provided the recommended materials are used, all systems are clean, and an inert gas, ie, nitrogen, is maintained over the system at all times. Table 10 is a brief listing of materials compatibiUty (125). 

Note from the Sec. 28 editors to the readers of this handbook Historically, previous editions of Perrys Chemical Engineers Handbook carried an extensive series of so-called corrosion resistance tables [listing recommended materials of construciion (MOC) versus various corrosive environments]. This practice goes back, at least, to the Materials of Construction Sec. 18, 1941, 2d ed. Unfortunately, if valid at all, these data are only usable as indicators of what will not work for. sure, the.se listings should not be used as recommendations of what materials are con o.sion resistant. The section editors have elected to no longer include these data tabulations. 

Table 1 shows materials of construction for general planning when specific service experience is lacking. 

Many salts are coiTosive to common materials of construction, as demonstrated in Tables 4.8 and 4.9. Corrosion may be promoted, or accelerated, by traces of contaminants. 

Table 4.14 lists the coefficients of expansion for selected materials of construction. 

Since it is chemically inert no special materials of construction are required. Selected physical properties are listed in Table 9.20.

The woven fabrics have various yarn patterns for different spacings between the yarn fabrics (Table 4-14). There is a wide variety of choices for not only the materials of construction but the tightness of weave and the size of the yarn. All of these factors along with the others noted earlier, make the selection of bag fabric an art that requires manufacturer s and plant s actual field tests. Woven fabrics have a low ratio of weave openings for yarn area and generally have a limited face velocity for air flow of about 1.5 to 3.0 cu ft/min/sq ft [47].

The expenditure, and potential savings estimated by the UK Committee on Corrosion for a variety of industries are shown in Table 9.1. The savings shown are those which could be made by better use of available knowledge, and do not include the potential benefit of future research and development. With RPs different performance capabilities can be obtained. Reason for this capability is because the designer can combine different materials in different proportions. Examples of properties, including other materials of construction, are shown in Figs. 5-9, 6-18a to c and Table 6-22.
