The NIH and the pharmaceutical industry have formed a new partnership to overcome barriers to early-phase clinical trials. The Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson, announced on July 9, 2003 grant awards for six cancer centers involved in a unique public-private partnership. Five pharmaceutical companies together with NCI put forth a total of 5.7 million for this partnership. Sheehan, John C. (pp. 88, 199, Plate 41) born in Battlecreek, Michigan, 1915, received his Ph.D. degree at the University of Michigan in 1941. After a few years in the pharmaceutical industry (Merck) he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he advanced to full Professor and where he remains actively engaged in research even after his retirement in 1976.
