The first reported case of timesharing for a mass spectrometer9 involved the design of an Ionspray interface with multiple sprayers to support the analysis of effluents from multiple columns. This approach led to the development of a multiplexed electrospray interface (MUX)10 using an LC/MS interface and multiple (identical) sprayers linked to a HPLC system and a spinning screen to allow the output of only a single sprayer to enter the MS (Figure 4.5). There are approximately 2700 compounds per primary screening mixture, and the readout is in essence multiplexed the ligands are individually ionized and identified in the mass spectrometer according to their exact mass positions. The readout, however, does not unambiguously identify compounds, as multiple compounds in a single mixture may have the same mass, i.e., a particular peak may correspond to as many as 31 compounds with closely related masses. Miniature cylindrical ion trap array An approach to the rapid screening of large numbers of samples in the areas of proteomics, industrial process monitoring, and metabolomics is to use a multiplexed inlet system with a multiplexed mass spectrometer having an equal number of parallel sample channels. To this end, a high-throughput mini-CIT array mass spectrometer has been developed and tested.
