In general, physical methods have been used to study tautomerism more successfully than chemical methods, and, of the physical methods, those involving measurements of basicities and ultraviolet spectra are the most important, followed by those involving measurement of infrared and proton resonance spectra. An attempt is made here to delineate the scope and to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods. A short review by Mason of the application of spectroscopic methods appeared in 1955. Recently a set of reviews on the applications of physical methods to heterocyclic chemistry has appeared, which treats incidentally the determination of tautomeric structure.

Wiberg has reviewed this oxidation and suggests that the complex of Mason and Kowalak is a mixed anhydride, cf. the oxidations of sulphur dioxide (p. 285) and formic acid (p. 316). The anhydride cannot be of neutral charge, however, as no acidity dependence is observed and a possibility is... 

Hence there are multiple solutions for the final set of 10000 compounds. The final selection can be diversity driven using for example cluster analysis based on multiple fingerprints [63], hole filling strategies by using scaffold/ring analysis (LeadScope [66], SARVision [66]) or pharmacophore analysis [67, 68]. Spin trapping is an often-used technique in the study of possible radical production in biological systems (for reviews see Kalyanaraman, 1982 Mason, 1984 Mottley and Mason, 1989), particularly by the detection and monitoring of spin adducts of the hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl ( OOH) radicals in view of their relation to possible damage mechanisms. This is a large area of research which it is not possible to cover in a limited review, and the treatment will therefore be restricted to a discussion of the electron transfer properties of biochemical systems (for a review on the application of the Marcus theory to reactions between xenobiotics and redox proteins, see Eberson, 1985) and... 

We shall not cover such other methods as theoretical calculations of the sign of optical rotation, circular dichroism, and so on in solution these have been recently reviewed in an excellent book by Mason (12).

Other volatile methyl mercury compounds, such as (C6H5)2Hg, are also formed. The CH3Hg+ unit is very inert with respect to decomposition. Therefore, once formed, methyl mercury compounds are not readily demethylated. The biogeochemistry of Hg in the environment is reviewed by Ridley et al (1977) and Mason et al (1993). 

Marrero and Mason [45] have reviewed the subject of diffusion in gases and give a comprehensive list of data. Diffusion coefficients of gases are inversely proportional to the pressure and vary with temperature according to a power of T between 1.5 and 2. If experimental values are not available, the Wilke—Lee method [46] predicts the diffusion coefficients of non-polar mixtures to within about 4% of their true value.
