Office of National Drug Control Policy annual report asserts that that about 80% of Americans abusing illegal drugs used marijuana. 

In a study of imprisoned youth in Canada, published in the October 1999 issue of the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, many participants cited inhalants as their first substance of abuse, preceding cigarettes, marijuana, illegal hallucinogens, and opiates.

All of the neuroleptics are consumed in their pure form and are rarely abused. Most of the sedative-hypnotics of abuse are diverted from legitimate sources and remain in their pure form. However, occasionally powdered forms of illegal drugs (such as ketamine hydrochloride), which are often manufactured in clandestine laboratories, are mixed with tobacco, marijuana, or other drugs. 

Much has been written about the negative effects of marijuana on the human body. Before proceeding, it is important to note that an extensive review of the literature reveals much uncertainty about this. Marijuana is the most widely used illicit (illegal) drug among adolescents—among the entire population, in fact—and opinions are polarized on each side of an often raging debate. 

Family conflict and discord Adolescents whose parents are often in conflict, frequently absent, or inconsistent in setting boundaries and guidance are more likely to use illegal drugs such as marijuana. 

NORML petitioned the DEA to reclassify marijuana, but was again denied. Today, marijuana remains a Schedule I controlled substance. Despite the threat of arrest for using an illegal drug, many people who suffer debilitating illnesses use marijuana medicinally today. 

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States and tends to be the first illegal drug teens use. 

Alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine are the drugs of choice among teens. While the first two are illegal drugs for minors, they are far more socially acceptable than marijuana, LSD, heroin, speed, and drugs that are illegal for adults, too. Caffeine is so well accepted that many people are surprised to learn that it is a drug.
