Roger Adams (1889-1971) wa s born in Boston, Massachusetts, and received his Ph.D. in 1912 at Harvard. He taught at the University of Illinois from 1916 until his retirement in 1957, during which lime he had an enormous influence on the development of organic chemistry in the United States. Among many other accomplishments, he established the structure of tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana. 

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main active ingredient in marijuana, reduces the amount of time spent in REM sleep, although tolerance to this effect can develop over time and the overall amount of time spent in REM sleep returns to normal levels. However, like people who constantly drink alcohol or take narcotic pain relievers, people who smoke marijuana daily can experience REM rebound after stopping the drug.
