All the previous discussion in this chapter has been concerned with absorption or emission of a single photon. However, it is possible for an atom or molecule to absorb two or more photons simultaneously from a light beam to produce an excited state whose energy is the sum of the energies of the photons absorbed. This can happen even when there is no intemrediate stationary state of the system at the energy of one of the photons. The possibility was first demonstrated theoretically by Maria Goppert-Mayer in 1931 [29], but experimental observations had to await the development of the laser. Multiphoton spectroscopy is now a iisefiil technique [30, 31]. [Pg.1146]

CAMET control catalyst was shown to obtain 80% NO reduction and 95% carbon monoxide reduction in this appHcation in the Santa Maria, California cogeneration project. The catalyst consists of a cormgated metal substrate onto which the active noble metal is evenly deposited with a washcoat. Unlike the typical 20 on titania turbine exhaust catalysts used eadier in these appHcations, the CAMET catalyst is recyclable (52). [Pg.199]

The chemistry of Lewis acid-base adducts (electron-pair donor-acceptor complexes) has stimulated the development of measures of the Lewis basicity of solvents. Jensen and Persson have reviewed these. Gutmann defined the donor number (DN) as the negative of the enthalpy change (in kcal moL ) for the interaction of an electron-pair donor with SbCls in a dilute solution in dichloroethane. DN has been widely used to correlate complexing data, but side reactions can lead to inaccurate DN values for some solvents. Maria and Gal measured the enthalpy change of this reaction... [Pg.425]
