Mannuronic acid

The methyl 2,3,4-trimethyl-a-D-mamiuronoside (XLI) was synthesized from methyl 2,3,4-trimethyI- -D-mannoside by the method previously described.  [Pg.177]

Three routes to the synthesis of n-mannuronic acid (XLIII) are now known. The first was based on the original method of Fischer and Piloty and involved the reduction of D-mannosaccharodilactone (XLII) with sodium amalgam. The second utilized methyl 2,3-isopropyli-dene-a-D-mannoside (XLIV) which was oxidized at C6 with alkaline potassium permanganate to methyl isopropylidene-a-D-mannuronoside  [Pg.177]

M = D — mannuronic acid G = L — guluronic acid MM and GG indicate M- and G-block regions MG indicates alternating regions. [Pg.432]

Glc = glucose GlcA = glucuronic acid GulA = guluronic acid Man = mannose ManA = mannuronic acid Rha = rhamnose Xyl = xylose Fuc = fucose. Chemical structures and properties are available (19). [Pg.73]

Alginates are made up of long chains of two monomers guluronic acid and mannuronic acid. The chains can be made of all one monomer or mixtures of both. The stems of kelp are made of chains with more guluronic acid, and the leaves (fronds) have more mannuronic acid. Guluronic chains bind tightly to calcium in mannuronic chains the calcium is more easily replaced by sodium, allowing the fibers to swell easily. [Pg.143]

The potential of the mannuronate ester donors in the formation of the p-mannosidic linkage has been demonstrated with the construction of a mannuronic acid alginate pentamer using a convergent orthogonal glycosylation.64... [Pg.44]

Polysaccharides. Na-alglnate was Isolated from Laminaria Hyperbo-rea. The guluronic acid content was found to be 63.6%, corresponding to an M/G (mannuronic acid/guluronic acid) ratio of 0.57. [Pg.227]
