Manganese amalgam

The formal potential was measured with the use of the saturated manganese amalgam electrode in a mixture containing 10 M Mn(II). This was also used for the rate constant calculations. 

In the case of the alkaline manganese dioxide cell, only high quaUty synthetic manganese dioxide, typically an EMD (224), is used and graphite is the cathode. The anode is an amalgamated 2inc. Potassium hydroxide serves as the electrolyte and the reaction can be summari2ed as follows ... 

Amalgamated zinc powder has been used as the negative material to prevent zinc corrosion and zinc passivation. Recently, from the viewpoint of environmental problems, mercury-free alkaline-manganese batteries were developed by using zinc powder with indium, bismuth and other additives [2-4]. Adding indium to zinc powder is the most effective way to improve the characteristics of the cells [3]. Figure 3 shows the variation in the internal impedance of the cells according to the additive content of the zinc powder. 

Inorganic solid wastes, particularly those containing toxic metals and toxic metal compounds, used Raney nickel, manganese dioxide, etc. should be placed in glass bottles or lined fiber drums, sealed, properly labeled, and arrangements made for disposal in a secure landfill. Used mercury is particularly pernicious and small amounts should first be amalgamated with zinc or combined with excess sulfur to solidify the material.

Manganese forms a decacarbonyl Mn2(CO)10 in which each manganese has the required share in 18 electrons to achieve the noble gas configuration. Reduction of this covalent compound with sodium amalgam gives the salt Na[Mn(CO)5], sodium pentacarbonyl-manganate ( - 1) in the ion Mn(CO)5 the noble gas structure is again attained. 

Other metals may be used in place of zinc, e.g. iron, copper, manganese 2 or even sodium amalgam or calcium.3...
