The strong affinity of manganese oxides for certain transition elements and the REEs provides another way to gain insight into geochemical processes in the oceans. Especially valuable are the records of cerium and europium anomalies preserved in manganese accumulations, which can define the relative proportions of hydrothermal and diagenetic processes in the sedimentary record.
