The emerging analytical technique of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a simple atomic emission spectroscopy technique that has the potential for real-time man-portable chemical analysis in the field. Because LIBS is simultaneously sensitive to all elements, a single laser shot can be used to record the broadband emission spectra, which provides a chemical fingerprint of a material. 

Sagger. NATO code-name for a Russ anti-tank missile, also known by the US alphanumeric designation AT-3, which is currently extensively deployed in Europe and elsewhere. In its man-portable version, the missile is carried into action in a Fiberglas case in which the warhead is separated from the motor. The lid of the case forms a base for launching the missile which has a launch rail on the underside of the motor section. The two parts are taken out of the case and the front legs of the rail on the motor section are slotted into the lid so that there is a small angle of elevation. This is done to ensure that the missile enters the operator s field of view when launched. The warhead (HEAT, piezo-electric fuze) is then clipped to the body.

The group has historically used improvised devices for its attacks, including gas canisters filled with explosives. However, FARCs also maintains a fairly sophisticated smuggling network of assault rifles that accesses illegal weapons supplies in both Central and South America. Finally, FARCs has also reportedly attempted to acquire man-portable surface-to-air missiles. If true, these weapons would help FARCs in its attacks on the Colombian military, especially against countemarcotics helicopters. 

DS2, 1 1/2 Quart (including ABC-M11). The Mil is used to decontaminate small areas that soldiers must touch. It is a steel container with an aluminum spray-head assembly and a nitrogen gas cylinder that provides the pressure. It is filled with 1-1/3 quarts of DS2, which is sufficient to cover 135 square feet. The ABC-M11 is an equipment-mounted, standard U.S. Army decontaminating apparatus used for operator spray-down decontamination. The item is man-portable (weight of approximately 5 pounds). The ABC-M11 has been replaced by the M13.

The nature of the operational space - whether traditional battlefield, urban insurgency, or domestic city - also requires new technologies be made rugged to endure the harsh operational environments. Products must be customized (or customizable) for the requirements of the operators and their setting. Requirements for an effective product include that it work reliably in mud, dust, ice, heat, toxic, or caustic environments. Tools must also have tolerance for shock and should be able to survive decontamination processes. Ideally, devices are reusable with few or no consumables, are easily man portable, and, of course, are cost-effective. These requirements not only aid the operators in completing their mission but better ensure their survivability.
