To sum up, 2MB2 emitted in milk by female rabbits meets the five criteria proposed by Beauchamp et al. (1976) to define a pheromone in the case of mammals. As rabbit milk releases neonatal behavior after full ejection, but not when collected from the mammary tract below the nipples (from the tubes or alveolae), 2MB2 is probably produced de novo in the distal part of the mammary apparatus (Moncomble, Coureaud, Quennedey, Langlois, Perrier, Brossut and Schaal 2005). Accordingly, the active compound carried in milk was named mammary pheromone (MP). [Pg.307]

As the mammary pheromone (MP) is emitted in milk and releases nursing-related behavior in neonate pups, its activity can logically be expected to be restricted in time and constrained by the metabolic needs of the pups. [Pg.307]

In short, the present situation regarding these two, differently named pheromones can be briefly summarized as follows. With the nipple-search pheromone we have a chemical signal with a clear survival function in a biologically relevant context but still chemically unidentified. With the mammary pheromone we have a single substance which undoubtedly releases specific responses within a certain range of concentrations but the function of which, in a biologically relevant context, still has... [Pg.322]
