As every nuclear power plant operator, Electricite de France have two permanent concerns to ensure safest possible generation and to get best overall economic performance. These two concerns are the basement of the maintenance policy and have lead EDF to clarify maintenance concepts and to initiate large studies aiming to optimize maintenance activities.

To establish remote maintenance concept with rack system, key technologies such as bilateral servo manipulator (BSM), roll-in type rack, remote connector bank, and remote sampling system have been developed. 

First wall and blanket components of DT reactors must be periodically replaced before their lifetimes expire. Scheduled maintenance, requiring extraordinarily complicated remote operations, will — under realistic assumptions — also gave a significant impact on the plant economy. In order to achieve competitive overall availability 80%), long lifetimes of the first wall and blanket structural materials must be achieved. These four major categories summarise the available maintenance concepts in the industry. Each concept can be implemented as a stand-alone regime or it could be integrated with each other to produce a sound regime. 

The time to failure of equipment is a fimction of its maintenance concept, and to capture this interaction the conventional time to first failure of reliability theory requires enrichment. This may be achieved using the delay-time concept.
