Magnetization Composites

Laboratory analysis of flush water indicates that some non-magnetic iron oxide may also be retained by the EMF. The non-magnctic iron removal is believed to be due to the presence of magnetic/noii-magnetic composite particles, which are magnetically attracted by the filter.

Both carbonyl iron and iron oxide particles were dispersed in the Elas-tosil 604 A. After mixing it with the Elastosil 604 B component, the solution was transferred into a cube-shaped mould. The cross-linking reaction was carried out at ambient temperature for 4.5 h to obtain the magnetic composites. After cross-linking polymerization, the cubed, cylindrical, and spherical samples were removed from the moulds [77,78]. 

Due to the magneto-rheological effect, the resulting magnetic composite becomes anisotropic in terms of mechanical and magnetic properties. One can easily vary the direction of the particle chains by the direction of the applied magnetic field, as shown in Fig. 6.

Changes in molecular conformation can accumulate and lead to shape changes (Fig. 27). The magnetic field drives and controls the displacement, and the final shape is set by the balance of magnetic and elastic interactions. Determination of the tensor allows us to describe anisotropic optical properties of the composites. In particular, for magnetic composites the effective value of the MO parameter Q, which plays an important role in the magnetooptics, can be evaluated.
