The quadripolar spectrometers whose resolution is limited to about 2000 are of simpler design than the magnetic sectors and are less costly. They are often used in conjunction with gas chromatography (see section 3.3) for purposes of identification. [Pg.53]

Starting from these methods, as we will see further on, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of carbon has provided an absolute percentage of aromatic, paraffinic, and naphthenic carbons. [Pg.61]

In Fig. 3a,b are shown respectively the modulus of the measured magnetic induction and the computed one. In Fig. 3c,d we compare the modulus and the Lissajous curves on a line j/ = 0. The results show a good agreement between simulated data and experimental data for the modulus. We can see a difference between the two curves in Fig. 3d this one can issue from the Born approximation. These results would be improved if we take into account the angle of inclination of the sensor. This work, which is one of our future developpements, makes necessary to calculate the radial component of the magnetic field due to the presence of flaw. This implies the calculation of a new Green s function. [Pg.330]

Due to the symmetrical construction the resulting magnetic field between the two coils is zero in y-direction, if a conductive structure is symmetrically situated in the area a (see fig. 3) in the near of the probe. A resulting field is detectable by the Hall-effect device, if there are unsym-metrics in the structure in area a. The value of the Hall voltage is proportional to the detected magnetic field. [Pg.369]

Small metal clusters are also of interest because of their importance in catalysis. Despite the fact that small clusters should consist of mostly surface atoms, measurement of the photon ionization threshold for Hg clusters suggest that a transition from van der Waals to metallic properties occurs in the range of 20-70 atoms per cluster [88] and near-bulk magnetic properties are expected for Ni, Pd, and Pt clusters of only 13 atoms [89] Theoretical calculations on Sin and other semiconductors predict that the stmcture reflects the bulk lattice for 1000 atoms but the bulk electronic wave functions are not obtained [90]. Bartell and co-workers [91] study beams of molecular clusters with electron dirfraction and molecular dynamics simulations and find new phases not observed in the bulk. Bulk models appear to be valid for their clusters of several thousand atoms (see Section IX-3). [Pg.270]

Exponent values derived from experiments on fluids, binary alloys, and certain magnets differ substantially from all those derived from analytic (mean-field) theories. Flowever it is surprising that the experimental values appear to be the same from all these experiments, not only for different fluids and fluid mixtures, but indeed the same for the magnets and alloys as well (see section A2.5.5). [Pg.639]

Application of an oscillating magnetic field at the resonance frequency induces transitions in both directions between the two levels of the spin system. The rate of the induced transitions depends on the MW power which is proportional to the square of oi = (the amplitude of the oscillating magnetic field) (see equation (bl.15.7)) and also depends on the number of spins in each level. Since the probabilities of upward ( P) a)) and downward ( a) p)) transitions are equal, resonance absorption can only be detected when there is a population difference between the two spin levels. This is the case at thennal equilibrium where there is a slight excess of spins in the energetically lower p)-state. The relative population of the two-level system in thennal equilibrium is given by the Boltzmaim distribution... [Pg.1551]

MW frequency of 10 Hz. There are various considerations that influence the choice of the radiation frequency. Higher frequencies, which require higher magnetic fields, give inlierently greater sensitivity by virtue of a more favourable Boltzmaim factor (see equation (b 1.15.11)). However, several factors place limits on the frequency employed, so that frequencies in the MW region of the electromagnetic spectrum remain favoured. One limitation is the sample size at frequencies around 40 GHz the dimensions of a typical... [Pg.1558]
