Magnetic reconnection

Magnetic reconnection The process of magnetic to particle kinetic energy conversion, assumed to be due to annihilation of magnetic flux in thin current sheets.

There are various ways how this huge field strength could be used to produce a GRB. The fields in the vortex rolls (see Fig. 8 in Rosswog and Davies 2002) will wind up the magnetic field fastest. Once the field reaches a strength close to the local equipartition value it will become buoyant, float up, break through the surface and possibly reconnect in an ultra-relativistic blast (Kluzniak and Ruderman 1998). The time structure imprinted on the sequence of such blasts would then reflect the activity of the fluid instabilities inside the central object. The expected lightcurve of the GRB would therefore be an erratic sequence of sub-bursts with variations on millisecond time scales. 

Trans-[Ru(Cl)(trpy)(PMei)2](ClO ) (6) or trans-[Ru(Cl)(trpy)(PBzi)2](ClO ) (7). A 100-mL, round-bottomed flask equipped with a teflon-coated magnetic stir bar and a gas inlet tube is charged with 4 or 5 (0.124 mmol) and a 2 1 (v/v) solution of acetone/EtOH (30 mL). The solution is outgassed with N2(g) for 5 min and then PMes or PBza (0.19 mmol, 1.5 equiv.) is added. The gas inlet tube is reconnected to the round-bottomed flask and the solution is allowed to stir under N2(g) at room temperature for 3 h. The color of the solution changes from red-violet to yellow-brown. After this time, the solvent is completely removed by rotary evaporation. The residue is redissolved in H2O (15 mL), and then a solution of NaC104 (1 g in 2mL H2O) is added to the ruthenium solution to precipitate a yellow-brown solid. The...
