Magnesium hydroxide suspension

Magnesium hydroxide suspension - heat magnesium oxide (heavy) for 2 h at 800°C. After cooling in a desiccator, make a suspension of 17 g in 100 ml water. 

Procedure. Steam is passed through the steam distillation apparatus for 20-30 min. Check the performance by pipetting 5 ml ammonium-N standard solution into the distillation unit, add 1 drop octan-2-ol, 6 ml magnesium hydroxide suspension and steam distil the released ammonia into 5 ml boric acid solution in a 100-ml conical flask. After approximately 40 ml distillate has been collected over a 5-min period, wash the tip of the condenser into the distillate, add 2-3 drops mixed indicator solution and titrate with 0.005 M H SO until the colour changes from green to purple. A blank distillation/titra-tion is carried out using 5 ml ammonia-free water and subtracted from the standard titre to give a result which should be 5.00 ml.

About 10 mL of a 5.8% suspension of aluminium hydroxide had no effect on the bioavailability of a single 50-mg dose of diclofenac i n 7 healthy subjeets. In another study, 10 mL of magnesium hydroxide suspension (850 mg) was found to have no signifieant effect on the rate or extent of absorption of a single 50-mg dose of dielofenac in 6 healthy, fasted sub-jeets. However, there was a tendeney to an increased rate of absorption. Aluco Gel (aluminium/magnesium hydroxide) had no effect on the extent of absorption of enterie-eoated dielofenac, but may have reduced the rate of absorption. No partieular preeautions would seem to be needed if these antaeids are given with dielofenae. 

The manufacturer of sulindac notes that an antacid (aluminium/magnesium hydroxide suspension) had no effect on the absorption of sulindac. ... 

The AUC of oral ketorolae 10 mg was found to be reduced by 11% (not statistically significant) when taken with an unstated amount of aluminium/magnesium hydroxide suspension (Maalox) in 12 healthy fasted subjects. The rate of absorption was not affected. ... 

A pharmacokinetic study in 24 healthy, fasted subjects showed that aluminium/magnesium hydroxide suspension Maalox), given as a single 20-mL dose four times daily for 3 days, had no significant effect on the absorption of a single 400-mg dose of tolmetin. ... 

The absorption of valproate was slightly, but not significantly, increased by an aluminium/magnesium hydroxide suspension but not by magnesium trisilicate or a calcium carbonate suspension. 

Antacids. In a single-dose study, the pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir 150 mg and its active carboxylate metakwlite were not affected by antacids. The antacids used were an aluminium/magnesium hydroxide suspension (Maalox) and calcium carbonate tablet (Titralac). ...
