All basic magnesium phosphates find apphcations in plastics as stabilizers. Other than this, monobasic salt is used in fireproofing wood. The dibasic phosphate is a food additive and also a laxative. The tribasic phosphate is an antacid and a nutritional food supplement. The compound also is an adsorbent and a pohshing agent in dental work. 

In nature, the compound magnesium sulfate is recovered from the mineral epsomite, which is used to produce epsom salt, MgS04 x 7H20. Epsom salt is sold in pharmacies for use as a laxative. It can also be used as a soaking aid for sore feet or sprained ankles. 

Magnesium hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia), which is a rapid and efficient acid neutralizer, will exert some laxative effects, due to the soluble Mg2+ ion. When combined with aluminum compounds, this will lessen the constipating effect of the latter.
