As a consequence of the difficulty to observe it, this molecule has long been neglected, despite its fundamental importance, as emphasized in Ch. 10. This attitude has been called by John Maddox (1) a scandal, a qualification that implies that it can no longer be defended. It stresses the need to know this molecule better, adapting methods used to study H-bonds to its study. Macroscopic global methods are, as in Ch. 3, first examined in this chapter, followed by classical molecular methods culminating in IR spectrometry, which is described in some detail because of its relatively recent implementation. 

John Maddox, editor of the journal Nature, later explained the importance of B2FH. First, he said, it provided the best explanation then available for the way elements are produced in stars. Second, it settled the ongoing dispute as to the changes that take place in stars as they move across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Finally, it provided a basis for calculating the composition of stars and predicting their ultimate fate.

Though the prediction of the structure and properties of any solid material is still out of reach, it is now possible to make reliable predictions on moderately complex structures. Therefore, the scandal revealed by John Maddox in 1988 is ending. 

Erfoar-Maddox correlation An empirical method used for the design of distillation columns that relates the number of ideal stages for a given separation and reflux ratio to the minimum number at total reflux and the minimum reflux ratio. The minimum reflux ratio corresponds to an infinite number of stages to bring about separation. It is named after American chemical engineers John H. Erbar and Robert N. Maddox.
