The ACS High Polymer Forum, similar to today s Macromolecular Secretariat, with the help of C.S. Fuller and A.C. Elm, began meeting at the 19 16 Atlantic City ACS meeting. Through the efforts of the Polymer Forum, the Division of Paint, Varnish and Plastics Chemistry and others in 1948 a group of university and industry chemists petitioned the American Chemical Society to establish a separate division of Polymer Chemistry. After a probation period... [Pg.133]

First, I want to thank those who participated in and those who helped to organize this very fine symposium. When I first became involved in the organization of the Macromolecular Secretariat in 1975, I suggested to Otto Vogl, then Secretary General, that a very suitable topic for a symposium would involve materials science aspects of macromolecular systems for the highly interdisciplinary character of the symposia sponsored by the Secretariat. Such a topic would touch not only on the most fundamental structure-property relationships, but also use of such relationships in real systems. [Pg.467]

The GENERAL IMPORTANCE of the effects of coulombic interactions on the properties of macromolecules is seen in the wide range of phenomena that are relevant to macromolecular science and engineering. This volume contains the majority of the papers presented at the Macromolecular Secretariat symposium held in Philadelphia in 1984. The sponsorship of this symposium by five ACS divisions, as well as the frequency of other symposia on this topic, both in the United States and in Europe, confirms the high level of activity in this area. [Pg.1]

As in other Macromolecular Secretariat symposia, each participating division selected a topic it considered very active at the time the meeting was organized. In addition, two sessions dealt with more general aspects of coulombic interactions. Thus, the coverage of the topic is not encyclopedic, or even uniform, but is dictated solely by divisional judgments and areas of high activity. [Pg.1]

In 1984, the Macromolecular Secretariat of the American Chemical Society will devote 4 days at the Philadelphia ACS meeting to a comprehensive symposium on coulombic Interactions in Polymers of which a major part will be devoted to the ionomers. [Pg.8]

In 1979 the Macromolecular Secretariat of the American Chemical Society agreed that a symposium on Urethane Chemistry and Applications was of broad and current interest and that such a symposium met the requirements of being topical to all of the member divisions of the Secretariat. As a result, this symposium was scheduled for 1980, and a group of specialists representing each of the member ACS Divisions, as well as the Division of Chemical Marketing and Economics, was recruited. These individuals subsequently became the associate editors of this book. [Pg.8]

The Macromolecular Secretariat Symposium upon which this book is based had as its objective interdisciplinary discussions of the topic from the points of view of five divisions of the American Chemical Society Cellulose, Paper, and Textile Colloid and Surface Polymer Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering and Rubber Divisions. The international interest in this topic is evident from the fact that contributions were received from 10 countries. [Pg.2]

The authors would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. A. L. Logothetls for the Invitation to prepare and present this paper at the Rubber Division Session of the Macromolecular Secretariat Symposium 1983, to Dow Corning Corporation for permission to write this paper, to the Fluids, Lubricants, and Elastomers Branch, Nonmetalllc Materials Division, Air Force Materials Laboratory for supporting the f1uorohydrocarbon alkyl spacer work In part under contract No. F33615-69-C-1301 and for permission to Include this work In this paper, and to their many colleagues who carried out the described work (some of which has not been previously published outside the patent literature). [Pg.140]
