The discovery and development of pentaaza macrocyclic ligand complexes of manganese(II) as functional mimics of superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes and their potential utility as human pharmaceutical agents is described. 

The copper complex tetraanhydroaminobenzalde-hyde (16 atoms in a macrocyclic ring, four donor nitrogens associated with Cu ) as to its functional similarity to superoxide dismutase is able to catalyse superoxide to molecular oxygen and paraquat interacted with the actin cytoskeleton in a competitive-like manner (UrbancIkovA and Ko-rytAr 1999).
