Disappearance of predators may also imbalance the equilibrium, and the problem scales up, such as the disappearance of foxes, predators of the deer mouse, which has allowed spreading of the hantavirus in the US, carried by mice (Levins 1993). Similarly, Sabia virus has emerged in Brazil, Guaranito virus in Venezuela (Lisieux 1994), machupo virus in Bolivia, and Junin fever in Argentine (Garrett 1994). In contrast, in a robust ecosystem, elimination of a predator provides space for another predator, such as in the disappearance of the coyote, which has opened the control of field mice to snakes and owls. When both predator and prey are endangered, it may occur that the prey develops resistance. This is taken into account in Volterra s equation (Ehrlich 1986).

Some arenaviruses, such as Lassa and Machupo viruses, are associated with secondary person-to-person and nosocomial (health-care setting) transmission. This occurs when a person infected by exposure to the virus from the rodent host spreads the virus to other humans. This may occur in a variety of ways. Person-to-person transmission is associated with direct contact with the blood or other excretions, containing virus particles, of infected individuals. Airborne iransmi.ssion has also been reported in connection w ith certain viruses. Contact with objects contaminated with these materials, such as medical equipment, is also as.sociated with transmission. In these situations, use of protective clothing and disinfection procedures (together called barrier nursing) help prevent further spread of illness.

Synthesis occurs in the host cell cytoplasm maturation involves budding from the host cell plasma membrane. Virions contain ribosomes. The human pathogens Lassa, Machuppo, and Junin viruses are Biosafety Level 4 pathogens - they must be handled in the laboratory under maximum containment conditions.
