In the early 1990s, at Newtown Square in Pennsylvania, Lyondell Chemical Company developed an interesting alternative to produce unsaturated polyesters. Based on this development, it became possible to produce a series of very flexible UPRs without sacrificing either mechanical or thermal properties. These products also showed good corrosion resistance when compared to conventional UPR resins.

As a result of the merger, Equistar controlled 7 billion in assets with proforma sales in 1997 of 6 billion. It was now North America s largest olefins producer and the second largest in the world. Lyondell acquired ARCO Chemical in 1998 for 5.6 billion, and the company changed its name to Lyondell Chemical Company. Lyondell bought the Occidental Stake in Equistar in a 400 m stock deal in 2002, and in 2004, Lyondell acquired Millennium, thus gaining 100 % ownership of Equistar.

In 2007, Basell merged with United States-based Lyondell Chemical Company, which had acquired the assets of Occidental Chemical Corporation to become LyondellBasell, which is now a leader in the polyethylene industry.
