Respiratory Cocaine use is associated with various pulmonary complications. Pneumothorax, lung cavitation, and pleural empyema have been reported [27 ]. [Pg.60]

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is one of the most successful pathogens of humans. Approximately one third of the world s population harbours latent infection with M. tuberculosis with no ill effect. Reactivation of infection in a small proportion of these subjects leads to progressive lung inflammation with necrosis, and the resulting cavitation permits aerosol spread of the mycobacterium to others. Following acute infection with M. tuberculosis, 5% of subjects will develop primary... [Pg.79]

Figure 1 Chest computed tomography demonstrating multiple pulmonary nodules from rheumatoid arthritis. Note that nodules are of different sizes and may he scattered randomly throughout the lung parenchyma. Cavitation can occur as seen in the largest nodule on this cut from chest computed tomography. Figure 2 Chest CT scan cavitary lung masses. A 35-year-old woman with a 9-year history of relapsing WG. The left panel shows bilateral lung masses with and without cavitation at the time of disease flare before treatment. Because of multiple drug tox-icities, remission induction therapy for this flare consisted of prednisone and rituximab (4 weekly infusions of 375 mg/m ). The right panel shows the follow-up CT scan after completion of the glucocorticoid taper. Figure 2 Chest CT scan cavitary lung masses. A 35-year-old woman with a 9-year history of relapsing WG. Silicotic PMF or complicated pneumoconiosis consists of lesions with a diameter of 1 cm or more (International Labour Office 1980) (Fig. 2.1.9). As is true with CWP, PMF is usually bilateral and upper to mid-zonal. PMF lesions may undergo cavitation and are associated with destruction of the lung parenchyma and bronchovascular structures. Marked distortion of the adjacent lung is seen due to fibrotic contraction of the lesion. Microscopically, silicotic PMF lesions almost always form on a background of simple pneumoconiosis and, in fact, consist of agglomerated simple silicotic nodules (Fig. 2.1.9). [Pg.20]
