The presence of luminescence is not only reserved for linear model compounds and one-dimensional organometallic and coordination polymers. Two-dimensional polymers using tri-coordinated 16-electron gold(I) center were also found to emit in the solid state (very broad emission centred at about A,. = 420 nm) [66]. In this case, no Au - Au interactions were possible because of obvious steric hindrance from the PPh fragments (inter-planar contacts).
