TotalsulfideconcentrationSHiSI fHzS], -f [HS ],) of about 1 mAf has been measured in a Louisiana salt marsh by Brannon (1973), a value not unusual for reducing marine sediments. Total dissolved sulfide-ion concentration [S ], may then be calculated for pH... [Pg.202]

FIGURE 11.3 Organic sulfur in Louisiana fresh brackish and salt marsh soils present as ester sulfur (E-S), carbon bonded sulfur (C-S), and total sulfur (Total). (Modified from Krairapanond et al., 1992.)... [Pg.450]

In Louisiana coastal marsh soils, inorganic sulfur constitutes 13-30% of the total sulfur pool, with HCl-soluble sulfur representing 78-86% of the inorganic sulfur fraction in freshwater, brackish, and salt marsh (Pezeshki et al., 1991 Krairapanond et al., 1992). AVS accounted for <1% of the total sulfur pool. Pyrite sulfur and elemental sulfur together accounts for 8-33% of the inorganic sulfur pool (Krairapanond et al., 1992). [Pg.451]

Methane Emissions from Louisiana Gulf Coast Eresh, Brackish, and Salt Marshes... [Pg.607]

The emissions of NjO from adjoining salt, brackish, and freshwater marshes within the Louisiana Barataria basin are 31, 48, and 55 mg N m, respectively (Smith et al., 1983). The NjO flux from this study was similar to NjO from the Narragansett Bay sediment (Seitzinger et al., 1980). The addition of nitrate to the salt marsh significantly increased the rate of N2O emission (Smith et al.,... [Pg.612]

Vertical marsh accretion determined from Cs dating indicated the deteriorating inland salt marsh to be accreting at the rate of 0.44 cm year This rate is approximately 0.8-1.0 cm year", less than the accretion rate needed to maintain a productive salt marsh typical of Louisiana Barataria Basin. [Pg.676]
