Long-term effects drug abuse

Information about long-term effects of SNA 1b derived from two sources its administration as an anesthetic and Its chronic use as a street drug. As to the latter, It must be noted that PCP rarely occurs in a pure form and commonly Is abused with other substances, such as THC and cocaine. 

The following chapters will include historical information on the discovery and use of inhalants. There will also be descriptions of the classes of inhalants and information given on many of the commonly abused chemicals. Explanations of the mechanisms by which inhalants act on the brain and body will follow, including the discussion of current research aimed at understanding drug addiction. The short- and long-term effects of inhalant abuse on the body will be described, and trends of inhalant use and attitudes toward it will be discussed. Lastly, there will be a presentation of information on treatment and prevention of inhalant use. 

In 1967, The President s Commission On Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice compiled a public document titled Task Force Report Narcotics and Drug Abuse, Annotations and Consultants Papers, referred to as TFR 1967. I will quote from the various consultants reports to lay a foundation for a better understanding of prohibitionist policies and the long term effects of these policies. 

Chronic abuse can lead to marked tolerance and psychic dependence with varying degrees of abnormal behavior. Frank psychotic episodes can occur, especially with parenteral abuse. Careful supervision is required during drug withdrawal because severe depression, as well as the effects of chronic overactivity, can be unmasked. Long-term follow-up may be required because of the patient s basic personality disturbances. 

The speciflc clinical use of the numerous available benzodiazepines depends on their individual pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Drugs with a high affinity for the GABAa receptor (alprazolam, clonazepam, lorazepam) have high anxiolytic efficacy drugs with a short duration of action (temazepam) are used as hypnotics to minimise daytime sedative effects. Diazepam has a long half-life and duration of action and may be favoured for long-term use or when there is a history of withdrawal problems oxazepam has a slow onset of action and may be less susceptible to abuse.
