Long targets

In both neutron and y-ray detection, the shielding of the detector is extremely important. Especially in the neutron detection measurements, the long target-to-detector distance (2-4 in) which is required to obtain velocity resolution via the neutron TOF technique means many more neutrons are produced than are actually scattered from the sample and then detected. These extraneous neutrons create a disastrous background unless the detector is adequately shielded. We have accomplished this with a large cylindrical shield which contains a lead cavity surrounded by Li2C03 loaded paraffin. The entrance collimator has steel and lead liners the main detector shield weighs about 2000 kg (see B in Fig. 1). [Pg.468]

Commercially available magnetic beads with attached probe ODN served as surface H due to minimum nonspecific DNA adsorption at the beads, very high specificity of the DNA hybridization was achieved. Optimum DE was chosen only with respect to the given electrode process. Detection of relatively long target DNAs was possible (1) by enzyme-linked immunoassay of target DNA modified by osmium tetroxide, 2,2 -bipyridine (Os,bipy) at carbon DEs (direct determination of Os,bipy at mercury and carbon electrodes was also performed) and (2) by using CSV at mercury or solid mercury... [Pg.3454]

Stimulation of horizontal and multi-lateral wells presents a very challenging problem. With a very long target zone(s), acid diversion plays a very important role in determining the efficiency of the acidizing job. Without a proper means for acid diversion, most of the injected acid... [Pg.330]

White phosphorous (P4) activation has been long targeted by synthetic chemists (Caporali et al., 2010 Cossairt et al., 2010b Scheer et al., 2010). Unlike main group elements and late transition metals (Caporali et al., 2010 ... [Pg.295]

Tran orm-based or long-range strategies The retrosynthetic analysis is directed toward the application of powerful synthesis transforms. Functional groups are introduced into the target compound in order to establish the retion of a certain goal transform (e.g., the transform for the Diels-Alder reaction, Robinson annulation, Birch reduction, halolactonization, etc.). [Pg.575]

Astatine can be produced by bombarding bismuth with energetic alpha particles to obtain the relatively long-lived 209-211At, which can be distilled from the target by heating in air. [Pg.150]

It is clearly evident from Che extremely simple example of the synthesis of Isovaleralde-hyde that a fully systematic approach to antithesis is not very useful. Chemists are not interested in encyclopedic catalogues of synthetic routes. We shall now discuss a few simple examples, where availability and price of starting materials are considered. This restriction generally reduces long lists of alternative target molecules and precursors to a few proposals. [Pg.199]

Linear polyethyleneimine results only in low yields from low temperature polymerization of ethyleneimine for very long reaction times. It can, however, be synthesized in a targeted manner by polymerization of 2-oxazolines with subsequent hydrolytic cleavage of the resulting polyamides (355,358). [Pg.11]

Receptor Regulation and Defects. Specific recognition and the initiation of response are the accepted attributes of the dmg—receptor interaction. However, target cells can alter on both short- and long-term time scales their sensitivity to dmgs. Such regulation, achieved by altering the... [Pg.281]
