Long Island Sound (Fig. 1) is typical of the larger estuaries found around the North Atlantic above 40°N latitude. Study of the tidal characteristics of the Sound began in 1835 (Le Lacheur and Sammons, 1932), but the first study of its physical oceanography was made by Riley (1952, 1956). Since that time the Sound has attracted the attention of scientists of many disciplines so that much of the basic data needed for analysis of sedimentary processes has been accumulated. [Pg.70]
