A central theme of this book is that effective logistics and supply chain management can provide a major source of competitive advantage - in other words a position of enduring superiority over competitors in terms of customer preference may be achieved through better management of logistics and the supply chain. 

Logistics and supply chain management can provide a multitude of ways to increase efficiency and productivity and hence contribute significantly to reduced unit costs. 

Stage 4 represents true supply chain integration in that the concept of linkage and co-ordination that is achieved in stage 3 is now extended upstream to suppliers and downstream to customers. There is thus a crucial and important distinction to be made between logistics and supply chain management.
