Logical framework

Obviously, the foregoing description of problems in the mechanics of composite materials is incomplete. Some topics do not fit well within the logical framework just described. Other topics are too advanced for an introductory book, even at the graduate level. Thus, the rest of this chapter is devoted to a brief discussion of some basic lamina and laminate analysis and behavior characteristics that are not included in preceding chapters.

Unfortunately, this virtuosity is sometimes viewed instead as a baffling complexity. One of the purposes of this book, therefore, is to show that there is an underlying order and organization that can serve as a logical framework and guide to this variety and to the interplay between properties and these structural features. The interplay is important because of the need to understand how structural modifications made to achieve some desired property can affect other properties at the same time. Major emphasis is placed on the reactions of metal complexes in solution undergoing either inner-sphere ligand substitution or electron transfer to and from the metal center. Such studies relate to the important selective role of metal catalysts in many areas of enzymatic, commercial, and modem synthetic chemistry. Clearly, this field has now matured to the point where basic theoretical considerations, although incomplete, can provide a logical framework for understanding the chemical reactivity of such systems and stimulate the investigation of (1) new and unique reaction pathways, (2) modified reagents, and (3) unorthodox matrices. 

In any environmental management plan, it is essential to understand the pertinent quality criteria and their relationship to the variables that can be manipulated directly. The construction of mathematical models imposes the requirement of a logical framework that connects causes and effects, identifies all pertinent variables, and defines their interrelationships. Even if a particular technique never becomes practical, the discipline imposed by the logical structure is valuable in highlighting important relationships.

The topics included in the EN-CAS QA manual are listed in Table I. We have found that these major divisions form a logical framework into which the individual SOP s can be inserted. 

In the interim, using systems and approaches that are direction-ally oriented to reduce risk can serve as a base for establishing the logical framework that facilitates practical decision making. 

In order to provide a logical framework for the discussion, an example will be worked out in enough detail to illustrate the methods used. There is no question of providing a recipe for designing nonisothermal reactors methods of working that are useful will be presented, and their application to a more or less typical problem will be described. 

The currently available NSAIDs exhibit a variety of molecular structures and it is usual to classify these drugs by their chemical class. Clinical trials in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, however, rarely find substantial differences in response to average doses of NSAIDs whatever their structure, and this no doubt reflects their common mode of action. Some 60% of patients will respond to any NSAID and many of the remainder will respond to a drug from another group. A structural classification is nevertheless used here as it provides a logical framework furthermore, specific toxicity profiles tend also to relate to chemical group (see below). Summary data on NSAIDs licenced in the UK are given in Table 15.2. 

The value in performing this analysis is that it provides a logical framework within which to describe the fracture behaviour of materials. The parameters used to define toughness, Kiq and Gic, are true material properties which may be determined independently of test conditions. The advantage of this over the conventional, ad hoc, methods of evaluation currently employed for polymers is considerable, both in material evaluation and the analysis of service failures.

Rene Descartes (1596 - 1650), who also published under the latinized name Renatus Cartesius, operated on the assumption that understanding of the physical world was contingent on the formulation of a sound metaphysical model or logical framework, drawing its first principles from reason. As the most fundamental principle he accepted a conservation law that demands the quantity of motion in the universe to remain constant. He equated matter with extension, which must therefore fill all space. 

The purpose of a risk management matrix is to (a) provide a logical framework for hazard analysis and risk assessment and (b) assist risk decision makers in arriving at their risk reduction and risk acceptance or declination conclusions. The implicit goal is to achieve acceptable risk levels. Several standards and guidelines now include the concepts of residual risk and acceptable or tolerable risk (e.g., ANSl/Bll TR3, ISO/IEC Guide 51, SEMI SIO—see references for full titles).
