A predator odor affected a pocket gopher, Thomomys talpoides, population in western Canada. First live-trapping removed the gophers from plots of 4ha area in an orchard. Then synthetic sulfur compounds from stoat, Mustek erminea anal glands (1 1 mixture of 2-propylthietane and 3-propyl-l,2-dithiolane) were... 

Wood mice, A. sylvaticus, and bank voles, Clethrionomysglareolus, differ in their responses to soiled traps. While both species are attracted to conspecific odor, wood mice preferred odor of the opposite sex, while bank voles did not, and wood mice avoided bank vole odor. This study suggests caution when using live-trapping for population censuses of rodents (Tew etal, 1994).

They may be formed by the solvation of radiolytically generated secondary electrons after these undergo thermalization 106, 123). This has been demonstrated in water (66, 83, 84) in alcohols 117) and in ethylenediamine 12). The presence of long-lived trapped electrons has been demonstrated in radiolyzed alkaline ice 71, 86), and their behavior was found to be analogous to elq.

The recovery rate of the reversible traps determines the duty-cycle cut-off below which only long-lived traps contribute to bias stress. At higher duty cycle, the current decay is the result of the simultaneous interplay of fast and slow trapping. 

The one-step method can be used when either short-lived or long-lived, trapped radicals are formed. The two-step method can be used when long-lived trapped radicals are formed (3). 

Two important factors in initiating graft copolymerization reactions of vinyl monomers with activated cellulose are (1) the lifetime of the free radical sites and (2) the accessibility of the free radical sites to the monomers. For ceric ion initiation or hydroxyl radical initiation the lifetimes of the free radicals on the cellulose molecule were short (5, 19) therefore, the monomer should be present when the free radicals were formed. For ionizing radiation both short lived and long lived (trapped) free radicals were formed (22, 26, 44). Consequently, the activation reaction and the copolymerization reaction could either be conducted... 

A number of muskrats caught in live-traps near the Belgian border were used for screening lures in two series of tests. 

We will examine whether the small mammals vulnerable to predation will avoid fresh predator odors in their home ranges. For this purpose we place in the woods live traps that are scented with odors from red fox and wolf. This experiment teaches not only basic ecology, but also the very practical skill how to test potential chemical repellents for rodent pests. 

Wear latex gloves to prevent human scent from interfering with the experiment. Cut filter paper so it fits on the bottom of live trap. Place into the trap. With an eyedropper, apply 0.12 ml of scent solution on the filter paper. 

Traps. If you use live traps, you must be willing to transport the captured pest to a new location. Other types of traps kill the pest to stop the damage. 

Gophers were live-trapped on 1-ha checkerboard grids with Longworth live-traps. Each grid (except for Summerland treatment at 4 x 12) had 40 (7 X 7) stations located at 15.2-m intervals. Live-traps were set within recently usdd tunnels or burrows indicated by fresh excavations of soil.

At the beginning of April, 30 adult, marked females and 10 males were introduced into a 36 m enclosure. The natural grass covered the enclosure floor, but the animals were fed with the same diet as those maintained in laboratory. At the end of each month, bank voles were caught with live-traps. The number of animals and their marks were checked. Nonmarked, young animals were assumed to have been born in the month of trapping.
