Liquid crystals Langmuir-Blodgett films

Lyotropic liquid crystals, Langmuir-Blodgett films and even monolayers adsorbed on surfaces can also be used as uniaxial orienting media. 

In addition to the two cases discussed above, images of surfaces coated with other organic adsorbates such as cadmium arachidate Langmuir-Blodgett films, (73), DNA (74), di-methyl and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (75), and K-24 liquid crystals (Foster, J.S. Frommer, J.E. Nature, submitted) have been obtained in recent publications. 

This simple model is sufficient to reproduce properties such as crystal structure, vibrational frequencies, dispersion curves, and elastic constants [40-43], These calculations were applied also to other organized media such as monolayer gaseous films on graphite [44,45], liquid crystals, and Langmuir Blodgett films.

Verani and coworkers widely investigated stimuli-responsive soft materials with interesting optical and redox behaviors. Such materials are able to self-assembly in functional ordered structures, as Langmuir-Blodgett films and liquid crystals, and possess potential applications in molecular electronics and magnetic films as well. These compounds are mainly based on Co(II) (94), Co(III) (95), Cu(II) (96), Fe(II)/Fe(III) (97), and Ni (II) and Zn(II) (98). A recent overview dedicated to colloidal systems, and their application in different fields has recently appeared in the literature (99).

High-resolution circuitry and active devices employing Langmuir-Blodgett film techniques or polymer-based transistors are being considered for the sophisticated electronics required in future vehicles. Temperature or energy balance in the vehicle could be controlled through conductive polymers or semiconductor deposits on electrochromic windows. Electroluminescent liquid crystals and fluorescent and electrochromic materials used for visual displays show promise for future development.
