Francois and Varoqui (34) measured diffusion rates of Cs+ in the hexagonal liquid crystalline phases of the water-cesium myristate and water-cesium laurate systems. In each case diffusivity was obtained as a function of temperature for a given liquid crystal composition. Values of 1-2 X 10"5 cm2/sec were reported for 60°-80°C. Diffusivity was about an order of magnitude lower in the gel phase of the cesium myristate system. [Pg.100]

The long-term stability of the nanomaterials used as well as the liquid crystal composites containing these are also very critical points that will need to be addressed with future research. Likewise, a complete characterization of all nanoparticles used is essential given the plethora of possible dissimilarities from one batch to another including size, size distribution, surface coverage, thermal stability, and ligand distribution on the nanoparticle surface (for mixed monolayer-capped nanoparticles), to name but a few. [Pg.378]

A typical experimental apparatus for studying photorefractivity in liquid crystals is illustrated in Fig. 2. Two coherent laser beams from an Ar+ laser are crossed in the sample, with a total of 5 mW of p-polarized output at 514 nm. The beams are unfocused and have a 1/e diameter of 2.5 mm. The liquid crystal composite is sandwiched between two ITO coated glass slides that are coated with octadecyl-silyl groups to induce the liquid crystal director to align perpendicular to the face of the glass slides, that is, homeotropic alignment [43], The cell thickness is determined by a Teflon spacer that is 12 to 100 p,m thick. A small electric field... [Pg.322]

For quantitative comparison of the grating strengths in the different liquid crystal composites, the first-order diffraction efficiency measurements of the Raman-Nath gratings are more amenable to analysis than the beam coupling ratio. Several concentrations for each of the dopants were utilized and Fig. 9 illustrates the highest diffraction efficiency values versus applied voltage for the samples with the optimal concentration of each dopant. A wavevector value of q = 1 x 103 cm-1 was again utilized. The first clearly noticeable fact is... [Pg.335]

Perfluoroalloxy liquid crystals were prepared by the Williamson ether synthesis using perfluoro iodopropene. These materials can be mixed with nematic liquid crystal materials to provide liquid crystal compositions having low viscosity, low refractive index anisotropy, high dielectric anisotropy, and broad nematic phase ranges. [Pg.315]

Single-phase simulations in relatively small boxes (20 -30 sites) were performed after the determination of the surfactant/silica liquid crystal composition to generate model materials for adsorption simulation. The advantage of generating such materials is that they have truly periodic boundary conditions in the three directions. In contrast, extracted model materials obtained directly from the interfacial simulation will have periodic boundary conditions in two directions, but in the third direction (z-direction) there are two liquid-crystal/dilute phase interfaces. [Pg.650]
