Lippes loop

There are eight types of inert lUDs used around the world two are unmedicated and six are copper. Outside of China, the Lippes Loop, made of polyethylene, is the most widely used unmedicated lUD. The other main type of unmedicated lUD, used mostiy in China, is a flexible stainless steel ring, ie, the Chinese lUD.

Figure 1 is a photograph of a Lippes loop prior to insertion, a stainless-steel Hall Stone ring as it appeared after removal from a wearer who had used it from 1964 through 1969 with no apparent complaints, and a Lippes loop voluntarily removed from another patient for the purpose of a planned pregnancy after five years of use.

In Figure 4 are presented other typical IR spectra that characterize the equilibrium surface deposits on intrauterine foreign bodies of different materials and configurations with different periods of intrauterine exposure. Time of exposure varied from 4.5 yrs (the upper left-hand spectrum of the coating on a stainless-steel ring) to only 1.5 yrs (the lower right-hand spectrum of the coating on a Lippes loop) all exposures occurred...

The fibrinolytic activity of menstrual blood in wearers of Lippes loops exceeds that of patients with menorrhagia, while the values in users of the Cu-T (200) are in the same range as in normally menstruating and untreated women. In users of Lippes loops no fibrin was found in the endometrial stroma. This may explain the increased blood loss associated with the use of the Lippes loop, which can be severe enough to cause anemia (31).
