There are a number of examples of macromolecules with very complex structural features such as stars, dendrimers, hyperbranches, and crosslinks. Each of fliese classes of materials comes with its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of synthesis, processability, and properties. The crosslinked polymer 64 was prepared by the thermal copolymerization of ferrocenophanes. The swelling properties of the crosslinked polymers allowed for determination of the solubility parameter of the analogous linear homopolymer. The crosslinked polymers were foimd to possess increased thermal stabihty relative to their linear analoges. 

Synthetic analog clusters have played a pivotal role in development of Fe-S cluster biochemistry. Indeed, the synthesis and characterization of clusters with [Fe2( t2-S)2], [Fe4( (,3-S)4], and linear [Fe3( t2-S)4l cores by Holm and co-workers (47, 48) were crucial in establishing the properties of these clusters and identifying these types of centers in biological systems. Currently, benzene alkylation to produce ethylbenzene and cumene is routinely carried out using zeohtes. We performed a study comparing a zeohte Y embedded in TUD-1 to a commercial zeolite Y for ethylbenzene synthesis. Two different particle diameters (0.3 and 1.3 mm) were used for each catalyst. In Figure 41.7, the first-order rate constants were plotted versus particle diameter, which is analogous to a linear plot of effectiveness factor versus Thiele modulus. In this way, the rate constants were fitted for both catalysts. 

This closure property is also inherent to a set of differential equations for arbitrary sequences Uk in macromolecules of linear copolymers as well as for analogous fragments in branched polymers. Hence, in principle, the kinetic method enables the determination of statistical characteristics of the chemical structure of noncyclic polymers, provided the Flory principle holds for all the chemical reactions involved in their synthesis. It is essential here that the Flory principle is meant not in its original version but in the extended one [2]. Hence under mathematical modeling the employment of the kinetic models of macro-molecular reactions where the violation of ideality is connected only with the short-range effects will not create new fundamental problems as compared with ideal models.
