Line plating

In duidized-bed roasters (19), the concentrate is suspended in an upward-moving air stream. The vessel is a refractory-lined steel shell with air entering through holes in a refractory-lined plate at the base. The sulfur dioxide concentration of the exit gas is 10—15%.

Empirical studies have shown that poorly drained vertical surfaces can drag out 5 to 10 times the process solution that well-drained vertical surfaces do (Soderberg 1936, Pinkerton 1984, p.695). Most metal shops make some efforts to drain workpieces before transferring them to another bath. It is common, however, especially on hand lines (plating lines on which workpieces are moved from bath to bath by hand rather than automatically) as well as on some automatic lines to transfer parts while they are still slowly dripping, indicating that drainage is not complete.

In the early 1960s and 1970s, the in-line plate-and-frame module was the only available microfiltration module. These units contained between 1 and 20 separate membrane envelopes sealed by gaskets. In most operations all the membrane envelopes were changed after each use the labor involved in disassembly and reassembly of the module was a significant drawback. Nonetheless these systems are still widely used to process small volumes of solution. A typical plate-and-frame filtration system is shown in Figure 7.10. 

The reducers for iron and acid reductions are sometimes equipped with side and bottom cast-iron lining plates, which may be reversed or replaced, in order to protect the vessel against the continuous erosive action of the iron borings. Alternatively, the reducers may be lined partially or entirely with acid-resisting brick or tile. Such a protective coating lasts almost indefinitely and performs satisfactorily in service.

Flere, the panel is transported in a horizontal mode through the plating equipment with stationary anodes below and above it. The panel continues to plate as it travels, interfacing with one anode after the other. The panel comes off the end of the line plated. 

A wide spectrum of process operations is seen in electroplating. Both jig and barrel plating may be carried out in a line plating operation (where the workpiece is moved automatically in a predetermined fashion from one tank to another, including precleaning and postplating operations) or a more flexible (and labour-intensive) vat plating may involve manual movement of the workpiece between the tanks.
