Lindane y-BHC

Lindane is one of eight different hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), C H Cl, isomers and its Chemical Abstract n.2cniQ is la, 2a 3P, 4a, 5a 6P-hexachlorocyclohexane [58-89-9] (y-HCH or y-BHC, ben2ene hexachloride) (80). Commercial products containing lindane are marketed as either a mixture of isomers or as the pure y-BHC isomer. Not unexpectedly, lindane is a highly stable lipophilic compound and it has been used extensively worldwide as an insecticide. In contrast, hexachloropentadiene, C Cl, is an extremely reactive industrial intermediate used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of a broad range of cyclodiene-derived pesticides, which include endosulfan, endrin, heptachlor, and several different organohalogen flame retardants (81).

Renberg [64] recommends the use of y-BHC (lindane), DDE or DDT as a gas chromatographic internal standard. The relative retention times of the derivatives corresponding to these internal standards are shown in Table 15.3. The detection limits for the different substances for 1L of a water sample are 0.0001-0. lppb. 

Average serum concentrations of 0.07, 0.19 and 0.04 ig/ml of a-benzene hexachloride (a-BHC), J5-BHC and y-BHC, respectively, were reported in 57 subjects who worked in a factory manufacturing lindane fi-BHC was the only isomer observed to accumulate on chronic exposure. A mean fat concentration of 45.6 pg/g of )9-BHC was reported in 8 subjects (K. Baumann et al., Int. Archs occup. envir. Hlth, 1980, 47, 119-127). 

Six isomers are separated from industrial products cl i S C They have slightly different physical characteristics. Only the 3T BHC is effective as insecticide. Industrial products generally contains d BHC and only 815% Y BHC. TheY BHC which is separated from the industrial products to more than 99% purity is called "Lindane". It is best to use the Li-product from the manufacture of Lindane. for firework material.
