Lignin methanol-soluble portion

As above-maitioned, the methanol-soluble portion (oily substances) was only obtained fiom the sample containing lignin, and the yield of that was close to the lignin ccmtent of the sample when the prc riate condition was selected. Therefore, methanol-soluble portion mainly consists of lignin-doived products ill). 

Table n shows diaracteristic features of the methanol-soluble fraction from Jt )anese cedar iCryptoma-iajcponica D. Don). The numbo of the ph olic hydroxyl groups of imtreated lignin in Japanese cedar was detomined to be 16.7 per 100 units of phenylpropane (Ce-Cs) residues. However, the methanol-soluble portion was found to have more phenolic hydroxyl groups than untreated lignin. On the other hand, the total yield of nitrobenzene oxidation products fiom m anol-soluble portion was lower than that of untreated lignin. 

The molecular wright of the methanol-soluble portion was found to be less than 2000. Thus, it was expected that this portion contains lignin-dmved mtmomoic, dimeric, trimmc and some oligomeric products (24).
