Light-pipe design

The LaTIS laser device (LaTTS, Minneapolis, MN) uses the slow injection of contrast material as a light pipe to carry the energy from the catheter to the embolus. The device was evaluated in a safety and feasibility trial at two U.S. centers. A preliminary account reported that the device could not be deployed to the level of the occlusion in 2 of the first 5 patients, and enrollment stopped at 12 patients. Although the catheter design was changed, an efficacy trial has not been pursued. ... 

Commercial GC/IR/MS instruments are available from Mattson Instruments (using a matrix isolation GC/IR interface) and from Hewlett Packard (using a highly optimized light pipe GC/IR design). Each uses a Hewlett Packard Mass Selective Detector to obtain electron impact MS data. The instrument in our laboratory is a prototype version of the Mattson instrument, built in collaboration with Mattson Instruments. 

Pyrometric thermometers can be of the following types optical (brightness), ratio (two-color), total (wide-band), and narrow-band, whereas the fiber optic designs can be of the light-pipe, black body, dual-wavelength, crystal, gap, and fluoroptic variety. Their temperature ranges are from -40 to 4,000°C (-40 to 7,000°F), and their errors range from 0.25% to 2% FS.

The collection of fluorescence photons can be performed by lenses, mirrors, light pipes, or a combination of them, and the design has to be optimized for the special conditions of the experiment. In particular, if the atomic spectrum excludes the rejection of laser light background by optical filters, one has to find a compromise between large solid angle and low acceptance for the scattered light.
