Light beam modulation

Materials for Electrooptic Modulation. The fundamental phenomenon of Pockel s effect is a phase change, A( ), of a light beam in response to a low frequency electric field of voltage, V. Relevant relationships for coUinear electrical and optical field propagation are as foUows (1 6) ... [Pg.134]

It is highly likely that by the second decade of the new millennium silicon-based computing will have reached fundamental technological or physical limits. Computers will therefore be based on substrates that exhibit superior performance characteristics. One possibility is the photon. Optoelectronic devices, which use substrates such as gallium arsenide, permit the interconversion of electrons and photons. Hybrid computers, which may already be available commercially by 2010, would use silicon for computation and photons for data transfer. The coherent modulation of very-high-frequency light beams enables many high-capacity... [Pg.167]

Instruments that utilize a flame for the atomizer can also utilize the graphite furnace. It is a matter of replacing the flame module with the furnace module and lining it up with the light beam. The same light source (usually a hollow cathode lamp) and the same optical path are used. See Figure 9.14 and compare with Figure 9.10. [Pg.259]

The light source can be a xenon lamp associated with a monochromator. The optical configuration should be carefully optimized because the electro-optic modulator (usually a Pockel s cell) must work with a parallel light beam. The advantages are the low cost of the system and the wide availability of excitation wavelengths. In terms of light intensity and modulation, it is preferable to use a cw laser, which costs less than mode-locked pulsed lasers. [Pg.178]

We have recently described another spectroscopic rnethod for observing IM reactions at atmospheric pressure that utilizes the photodetachment-modulated electron capture detector (PDM-ECD) as a means of monitoring the negative ions either consumed or produced in an IM reaction. The reaction of interest is made to occiu in a steady-state flow-through reactor in which ionization of the buffer gas is continuously caused by a Ni-on-Pt foil beta emitter. A chopped light beam of... [Pg.237]

The next development was modulation. A rotating sector (often crudely referred to as a chopper) is placed in the light beam (Fig. 2.12b). As the... [Pg.34]

As a method to control wavepackets, alternative to the use of ultra-short pulses, I would like to propose use of frequency-modulated light. Since it is very difficult to obtain a well-controlled pulse shape without any chirp, it is even easier to control the frequency by the electro-optic effect and also by appropriate superposition of several continuous-wave tunable laser light beams. [Pg.385]

As to the practical way of producing a suitable modulation, a series of proposals have been made. In practically all cases a modulator is introducted into the light beam, whereas the polarizing prisms are kept at rest. It appears that the general shape of the lower curve in Fig. 6.5 remains unchanged. More precise calculations can be carried out with the aid of a matrix calculus, as reviewed by Walker (216). [Pg.302]
