Because The Federalist was written as a contribution to the ratification debate of 1787-88, it cannot be understood without some understanding of that debate. Indispensable collections of documents — speeches, pamphlets, letters, sermons, broadsides, newspaper articles, minutes, and memoranda - include Max Farrand (ed.). The Records of the Federal Convention of ij8j (New Haven Yale University Press, 1911—37 repr. 1987), 4 vols. Paul Leicester Ford (ed.), Essays ort the Constitution of the United States (New York, 1892 repr. New York Burt Franklin, 1970) and Leicester Ford (ed.). Pamphlets on the Constitution ofthe United States (New York, 1888 repr. New York Da Capo Press, 1968) Jonathan Elliot (ed.). The Debates in the Several State Conventions on the Adoption of the Federal Constitution (Philadelphia J. B. Lippincott, 1861-63) Philip B. Kurland and Ralph Lerner (eds.). The Founders Constitution (Chicago University of Chicago Press, 1987 repr. Indianapolis Liberty Fund, n. d.), S vols. [Pg.633]

The Federalist has for so long (and quite rightly) been regarded as the definitive defense of the Constitution that other Federalist writers have been overlooked or forgotten. That neglect is nicely rectified in Colleen A. Sheehan and Gary L. McDowell (eds.), Friends of the Constitution Writings of the Other Federalists (Indianapolis Liberty Fund, 1998). [Pg.634]

As well as in other Central-Eastern European countries, state-funded universities in the Czech Republic suffered from economic changes during the transition period. Although student em-olment rose by 60 %, this was not sufficient to meet educational demand. At the beginning, Czech Technical Universities had the liberty to set their own admission policies, without state-wide regulations. [Pg.133]
