Many important reactions involve catalysis by Lewis acids or bases. One of the most important of these is the type of reaction carried out by Charles Friedel and James Crafts. These reactions, known as the Friedel-Crafts reactions, actually involve several types of important processes. One of these is alkylation, which is illustrated by the reaction of benzene with an alkyl halide in the presence of A1C13, a strong Lewis acid.

Why this emphasis Schweber has portrayed Slater as a man who developed a deep feeling of both inferiority and competitiveness toward his European mentors and peers in the fields of atomic physics and quantum electrodynamics. Slater was not alone in this reaction, as Henry James made clear. Slater, like other American physicists and chemists, used his influence in Boston, New York, and Washington circles, as well as his position within his own institution, to build up American science in an area where Americans could take a competitive lead. 107 Donnan had written Lewis in 1921 that "you are making old Europe sit up some. If it wasn t for Planck, Einstein, Rutherford, and Bragg, we should be in a bad way." 108 But it was not enough for Europeans to sit up "some" they must be made to gawk. 

Fifteen prominent chemical engineers first met in New York more than 60 years ago to plan a continuing literature for their rapidly growing profession. From industry came such pioneer practitioners as Leo H. Baekeland, Arthur D. Litde, Charles L. Reese, John V. N. Dorr, M. C. Whitaker, and R. S. McBride. The technical working of massive platinum should be ascribed, however, to Thomas Cock, a brother-in-law of the platinum-refiner P. N. Johnson, rather than to Wollaston. Cock worked out the process in William Allen s laboratory at Plough Court and, at Allen s request, communicated it to Wollaston (51). According to G. Matthey, P. N. Johnson was the first to manufacture platinum on a commercial scale and the first to prepare a large and perfect sheet of the pure metal. James Lewis Howe has stated that Chabaneau s process was rediscovered by Knight and possibly also by Cock (72). 

First introduced by Charles Friedel and James Crafts in 1877, the FC alkylation is an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction where the electrophile is a carbocation, R. This carhocation is generated hy AICI3-catalysed ionization of alkyl halide. For example, benzene reacts with isopropylchloride in the presence of Lewis acid to produce isopropylbenzene.
