Levonorgestrel Plan

Plan B is the only product approved for EC and is the regimen of choice. Plan B contains two tablets, each containing 0.75 mg levonorgestrel. The first tablet is to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse (the sooner, the more effective) the second dose is taken 12 hours later. It is available without a prescription for women at least 18 years old and for those less than 18 years old by prescription. It is sold only in pharmacies and must be kept behind the counter.

Emergency contraceptive Levonorgestrel, 0.75 mg tablet taken as soon as possible but no later than 72 hours after unprotected intercourse repeat dosage 12 hours later Plan Levonorgestrel prevents ovulation and may inhibit fertilization or implantation. Reduces the chance of pregnancy by up to 89% when taken as directed within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. Plan is available behind the counter at pharmacies and sold under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. A prescription is needed for women < 17 years of age.

POSTCOITAL OR EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVES The FDA has approved two preparations for postcoital contraception. PLAN-B is two doses of the minipiU (0.75 mg levonorgestrel per pdl) separated by 12 hours PLAN-B will soon be available without a prescription for women 18 years old and older, preven is two 2-pill doses of a high-dose oral contraceptive (0.25 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.05 mg of ethinyl estradiol per pUl) separated by 12 hours. The FDA also has declared other products with the same or very similar composition safe and effective for use as emergency contraceptive piUs.
