At that time, calcium carbide was imported from Norway, a source that would soon be cut off. From 1935, there had been attempts by several British firms to gain government support for carbide production. The principal proposal was for a plant with an output of 20,000 tons of calcium carbide at Llannerch-Y-Mor, near Mostyn, Flintshire, to be constructed by the North Wales Carbide Corporation Ltd. Despite Levinstein s warning that [y]ou can shirk for four years putting down a carbide plant you may not be able to shirk the consequences, this scheme met with no success.
