Thrombocytopenia levetiracetam

Hematologic The thromboc3rtopenic potential of levetiracetam has been retrospectively investigated in 758 patients aged 18 years or older [213 ]. There was thrombocytopenia in 29 patients, in 23 of whom an alternative cause was established four had pre-existing thrombocytopenia without any appreciable change in platelet count after levetiracetam. In one patient there was a clear temporal relation between thrombocytopenia and the start of levetiracetam therapy. The authors concluded that thrombocytopenia is a rare and reversible complication of levetiracetam therapy and that its mechanism remains still unknown. 

A patient with glioblastoma multiforme and partial epilepsy developed thrombocytopenia probably induced by levetiracetam [214 ].

Hematologic Thrombocytopenia has been reported in a child [194 ] and an adult with epilepsy [195during treatment with levetiracetam, in one case requiring blood transfusion. The adverse effect occurred within days or weeks and quickly resolved after withdrawal.

Hematologic CBZ has been associated with thrombocytopenia. This typically manifests within the first 2 weeks of CBZ use and may be asymptomatic. A 17-year-old girl developed symptoms of thrombocytopenia (hematuria, generalized petechial, and ecchymotic purpura) 2 weeks after starting CBZ 600 mg/d. She was also taking levetiracetam 1000 mg twice daily, VPA 1000 mg twice daily, and topiramate 25 mg twice daily. The thrombocytopenia resolved after CBZ was discontinued, recurred when CBZ was restarted, and resolved again after CBZ was withdrawn [52 ].
