Leveling-off degree of polymerization

When cellulose is hydrolyzed at elevated temperatures with aqueous mineral acid not only does it lose weight but the degree of polymerization (DP) of the residue falls rapidly initially and then attains a relatively constant value which is called the leveling-off degree of polymerization (LOOP) (Figure 4).
