Lengths of segments

Using proton NMR of solutions, the composition of polymers can be analyzed.47 Carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy is a useful tool for studying the sequence length of segments in copolymers and thereby determining the blockiness of the copolymer. With solid-state NMR, the mobility of chain segments can be studied and the crystallinity determined. 

Circles, rectangles, and squares are easily described using the coordinate axes and some points and equations. The distance formula for the coordinate plane allows you to solve for lengths of segments if you have the values of the coordinates at either end.

For details of the individual methodologies employed in each study reviewed herein the reader is directed to the particular reference cited. One feature common to all of these studies is the use of model compounds to represent a particular polymer chain. In general these model compounds are devised to incorporate all or at least most of the essential features of the parent polymer chain. At the same time, these model compounds should be constructed conservatively from the standpoint of length of segment and number of atoms (e.g., size of substituents) so as to economize on computer resources and to ensure reasonable CPU... 

A coil-shaped molecule can be characterized by its end-to-end distance L or by its radius of gyration Rq (Figure 4-11).
