This study also found that new schizophrenic symptoms often emerged during the 6 weeks of placebo treatment, whereas worsening of symptoms was prevented by antipsychotics. Heinz Lehmann (33) coined the term psychostatic to describe the ability of phenothiazine antipsychotics to prevent the reemergence of symptoms. 

More than a dozen drugs, almost all of them in use for many years, can be classified as neuroleptics. The phenothiazine derivatives were originally the most commonly used class of neuroleptic drugs. Chlorproma-zine is the prototype, developed in France and introduced into North America in 1953 by Heinz Lehmann. Its brand name in Canada and England is Largactil, and in the United tates, Thorazine. The antidepressant amoxapine (Asendin) is metabolized into a neuroleptic and has similar effects and, more important, adverse effects, such as tardive dyskinesia. All the classic neuroleptics block dopamine, but all of them also affect other neurotransmitter systems. 

Heinz Lehmann introduced chlorpromazine into North America via Montreal in May 1953. Lehmann and Hanrahan (1954) published the first article in English promoting its psychiatric use. They stated,... 

Some 56 hemoglobin variants are known which denature and precipitate within the red blood cell, forming a so-called Heinz body. There is an associated hemolytic anemia of varying severity, which is termed congenital Heinz body hemolytic anemia (Bunn et al., 1977). Examination of the structures of the abnormal hemoglobins suggests that instability can be attributed to five mechanisms (Perutz and Lehmann, 1968 Morimoto et al., 1971). There may be (1) amino acid substitution in the vicinity of the heme pocket (2) disruption of secondary structure (3) substitution in the interior of the subunit (4) amino acid deletions and (5) elongation of the subunit.
