Lecture demonstrations, chemistry

It is expected that, in the future, inquiry, project-, problem- and context-based approaches will be given more emphasis. Cooperative forms of laboratory instmc-tion must surely be further and systematically explored, taking into account the research-based recormnendations. Lecture demonstrations, effectively designed and performed, will also be useful. Other nonconventional methods can be effectively employed, such as the use of home-laboratory kits to teach general chemistry through distance education (Kermepohl, 2007).

This war work was undertaken with the women chemists of Bedford. As discussed in Chap. 4, Bedford personnel and students had been evacuated to Cambridge, and for the duration of their stay Simpson held the position of Demonstrator and Assistant Lecturer in Chemistry for Bedford College. Following the departure of the Bedford students in 1944, she was appointed as College Lecturer in Chemistry at Newnham and was elected to a Teaching Fellowship.

Beddoes and Watt shared a chemical mentor - Joseph Black. Beddoes studied chemistry with Black whilst a medical student in Edinburgh in the early to mid-1780s, and when Beddoes began to lecture in chemistry at Oxford, his approach bore Black s imprint. He sought Black s advice about laboratory technique, and adopted the arrangement of chemical substances wholesale from Black s lectures. He told Black that he was equipped to demonstrate all Lavoisier s key experiments, and that he adopted a version of Lavoisier s chemistry in his own lectures.105 Though in many respects well-equipped, Beddoes did not manage to mimic Black s success as a lecturer. His main problem was a lack of skill in experimental demonstrations.106... 

In 1899, Hibbert accepted an appointment as Senior Demonstrator and Assistant Lecturer in Chemistry at the University College of Wales, in Aberystwyth. Two years later. Dr. J. J. Sudborough was appointed Professor of Chemistry, and Hibbert published four papers with him, during 1903-04, on addition compounds, on the differentiation and estimation of primary, secondary, and tertiary amines, and on the estimation of hydroxyl groups in organic compounds. 

This lecture-demonstration method is used by good chemistry teachers for imparting chemistry education in class room. By using this method it is possible to easily impart concrete experiences to students during the course of a lesson when the teacher wants to explain some abstract points. Chemistry lecture demonstrations have gained wide acceptance for illustrating fundamental chemical principles and concepts, especially in introductory classes, by promoting discussion around relation between the macroscopic world... 

On the basis of these results, it was reasonably concluded that using lecture demonstrations substantially promoted learning of chemistry.

Le Eevre had presented numerous well-regarded public lectures on chemistry in mid-seventeenth-century France and was appointed demonstrator in chemistry at the Jardin du Roi in 1650. The mid-seventeenth century was a period of crisis throughout Europe. Failures of crops, famine, desperate poverty, frequent wars, and divided and shifting loyalties between nobles and kings, played out against a background of pervasive conflict between Catholics and Protestants.

Some computer exercises will be discussed briefly in this section. They serve as laboratory exercises for the second semester of physical chemistry sequence when quantum chemistry is taught. These computer exercises are also used in the lecture demonstration format. Sometimes they are given as extended problem assignments. Four software packages are used to various degrees in these exercises BASIC programs, spreadsheet templates, Mathematica, and Mathcad. 

The creation of courses oriented toward sustainable development or sustainable chemistry in science may challenge the lecturer in chemistry insofar as the concepts of sustainability and development rely more on societal postulates than on real scientific truths. The notion of green chemistry has at least the advantage of showing that chemists are aware of the sometimes irresponsible use which has been made of their science, and that they have the will and the means to address such use. Thus, chemistry presents a positive aspect often overlooked in the media, which may justify a renewal of interest by young people.
